XR in Telecoms and Media Case Study: Mursion and T-Mobile

Training team members with immersive content

In recent years, the telecoms and media landscape has grown increasingly intertwined with the extended reality industry. Not only are companies in the telecoms world investing heavily in tools and services to help power the next generation of immersive experiences, with 5G, but they’re also leveraging these solutions themselves, for a variety of use cases.

For instance, when T-Mobile was preparing for its merger with Sprint, it wanted to find a way to effectively handle the change management conversations and training initiatives that were sure to emerge during the transition. Bringing multiple employees together in a new ecosystem can be a complicated process for any business, particularly in today’s distributed world.

Fortunately, T-Mobile quickly found a solution to its potential M&A challenges, by working with the XR training company, Mursion. The brand decided to implement a new intelligent simulation solution, designed to accelerate the consolidation of the merging teams.

Preparing for Change with Intuitive Simulations

For years, T-Mobile has focused on facilitating its teams and empowering its leaders with training and development programs. The company’s strategy revolves around the use of quick bursts of microlearning sessions, paired with experiential experiences. Building on this foundation, the brand decided to develop a new learning strategy, intended to help leaders practice managing changing business conditions, likely to emerge during the upcoming M&A event.

Working with Mursion, T-Mobile exposed cohorts of business leaders to simulations of change management scenarios, built in virtual reality. Learners were challenged to approach a range of common scenarios from different angles.

For instance, some lessons focused on finding ways to generate buy-in from employees who might be resistant to change, but influential to other team members. The learners accessed a custom digital environment for the training experience, and moved through each lesson in short thirty-minute increments. Not only did the immersive learning experience increase engagement, but it was an effective tool for the company’s distributed teams, as lessons could be accessed anywhere.

Preparing Communications Teams for Change

T-Mobile’s strategy for immersive learning in the telecoms landscape resulted in phenomenal success. After implementing the Mursion training simulations into its development strategy, the company found that almost 90% of all of the employees exposed to the content showed improved levels of competency in handling change management scenarios.

The success of the XR training initiative has since inspired T-Mobile to continue its exploration of immersive tools. The brand expanded the scope of their training strategy, to include new lessons on leading difficult team meetings, and even delivering support to an employee facing emotional distress. 20 new learners are added to the program on a monthly basis, and the company plans on expanding its number of simulations going forward too.

The use of simulations even expanded into other domains of T-Mobile’s business, such as the NXT LVL program for training top-performing retail leaders in B2B sales onboarding strategies.
